Transition to Adulthood

12/13/14: Comment from John: Yes definitely!  This blog is needed by us families who are in the same boat.  Very much needed.  Hey Lora, you provided families with lots of information back when your sons were little — so I’m not surprised you’re still sharing.  Thank you for your generosity!  I look forward to reading this blog.

12/13/14: Comment from Christie: It’s wonderful to hear from you after all of these years! [Our daughter] turned 18 this September and we are filing for guardianship. She will continue her education until age 21 at Kennedy Krieger and then we are on our own. Lots of changes and progress through these past few years. It would be great to catch up sometime!

12/13/14: Comment from Susan: While I am the parent of neuro-typical kids, I have a love, respect, and appreciation for kids and families with autism. My nephew JA is a non-verbal, total-care, beautiful, inspiring 17 year old with CP and autism. I can honestly say that he has taught me more than most people I have ever met, and he has never spoken a word to me. I have watched his family struggle to rise above the daily, hourly challenges they face, and have spent hours pondering the mammoth mountain that lies before them as JA ages out of the services he has known. What will they do? Lora, when I read this beautiful opening post I feel like you are there, with arms wide open, offering to share your wisdom and the honest story of your own journey. It encourages me and gives me hope to know that there is a place people can come to talk, explore, and consider how to make it over the mountain. I cannot thank you enough for opening up your heart to do this. Sincerely.

12/13/14: Comment from Richard: Lora: Thank you for sharing this. I will be interested to read more.

12/14/14: Comment from Karen: Hi Lora, I have been super lucky to have my son be 3 years younger than yours. Your family’s footsteps have been very valuable to us. Glad to see you are all happy. My son [W] is now 18 . . . . [remainder withheld for privacy]. Hope to hear from you. Thanks!
